MONOBOB | WOG BEIJING 2022

WHAT IS THE NEW OLYMPIC EVENT FOR WOMEN ONLY TO BE PRESENTED AT THE 2022 WINTER GAMES?

One of the seven new events at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the monobob is an individual version of the bob that has increased women's participation in sports. Read on to find out what is different about monobobs and who are the big names in this sport at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Who said bob can only be a team sport? For the first time, the Winter Olympics will host a monobob competition - an individual event exclusive to female athletes in Beijing in 2022. Named after the Greek word 'mónos' (single), the monobob will increase women's participation in the Olympic bobsleigh by joining the women's two-seater competition. The men already have two events: a four-seater and a two-seater. The competition was part of the program of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer in 2016 and Lausanne in 2020, with the participation of both sexes.

Find out below what to expect from the female monobob in Beijing 2022, when to look out for it.

What is different about monobob?

While bobsled competitors share the roles of pushing, driving, and breaking, monobob competitors have to do everything on their own, in sleds of at least 162 kg.

“Sometimes it gets lonely. Bob weighs almost as much as a two-seater sled and you need someone to help you carry them, ”said Jamaican double athlete Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian.

However, the challenge is the same for everyone. “The way the monobob is set up, you have standardized sleds. So it comes down to you as an athlete and a driver and gives you the right test. Victory does not come down to rich equipment. We all have the same sled. We can see who is at the top, Canadian Cynthia Appiah told Olympics.com in 2020.

More different disciplines in a bob for women

Women began competing in the Olympic bobsled in Salt Lake City in 2002. Twenty years later, the monobob gave bobsleigh athletes around the world the opportunity to compete for more Olympic medals.

Kaillie Humphries from the USA, one of the most successful bobsled athletes and a big proponent of women's representation in sports, welcomed the new event.

"It's great to know that women have more chances to win medals, and winning first-ever (World Cup) was just a little cherry on top," she said. "I worked hard to be able to win both competitions (monobob and two-seater for women)."
