OLYMPIC VENUES | BEIJING ZONE

The venues at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are divided into three zones: Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou.

Below is a more detailed overview of each arena, as well as the Olympic villages that will be home to athletes during their stay in China.

Beijing zone

Located in central Beijing, this zone will host primarily ice sports, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games.

The National Stadium

Events/competitions: Opening and closing ceremony

The National Stadium is a sports arena inherited from the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. Also known as the "Bird's Nest" for its unique design, this iconic stadium also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Athletics Championships, and the Summer Final.

Although sports competitions as part of these Games will not be held on this arena, the Bird's Nest will once again host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games.

National Aquatics Center
Events / competitions: ice bowling

Another cult arena inherited from the 2008 Games, which will be used again, is the National Water Center. At the 2008 Games, this arena hosted the disciplines of swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming. Combined with its checkered design, it has been nicknamed the “Water Cube”. For the needs of this Olympics, the Water Cube was turned into an "Ice Cube", during the preparations for the ice bowling competition. After the 2022 Olympics, this multifunctional arena will continue to be used for both winter and summer sports, depending on the season.

National Indoor Stadium
Events / competitions: ice hockey

This sports arena was also inherited from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. It was nicknamed "Fan" because of its similarity in design to the traditional Chinese fan. . It hosted the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in 2015, and will be the venue for ice hockey competitions with the Wukesong Sports Center at these Games as well.

Wukesong Sports Centre

Events / competitions: ice hockey

After hosting a basketball tournament at the 2008 Olympics, the Wukesong Sports Center has been successfully used as a multi-sport arena in the years since. With a capacity of 18,000 spectators, it will be used as the main indoor arena for ice hockey at the 2022 Winter Games, alongside the National Indoor Stadium.

National Speed Skating Oval

Events/competitions: speed skating

The National Speed Skating Stadium is the only new venue in the Olympic Park built for the 2008 Games. The hall was built on the site of a field hockey field, which was used for hockey competitions as well as archery at the 2008 Games. skating is nicknamed "Ice Strip", and will host speed skating competitors during the Beijing 2022 Games.

Capital Indoor Stadium

Events/competitions: speed skating, figure skating

And this sports arena is inherited from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. After hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics volleyball tournament, the main indoor stadium will be the venue for the speed and figure skating competition at these Olympics. The hall, which was built in 1968, hosted several important sporting events, including a table tennis match between China and the United States, a ping pong diplomacy exchange program in 1971, and one of the first NBA matches in China in 2004.

Big Air Shougang

Events/competitions: freestyle skiing, snowboard Big Air

Undoubtedly, the most unique venue at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the Big Air Shougang, built on the site of a former iron mine, located between four industrial cooling towers. It is the first of its kind in the world and will host freestyle skiing and big air snowboarding at the Games. After the Games, this arena will be used for various competitions and training, as well as for cultural and social events.
